My favorite things you can do with Amazon Echo Show (2024)

There are many tricks you can do with smart displays. But not all are created equal, nor is it worth following this style of advice.

The basics are simple. Almost everyone knows how useful it is to have a smart speaker or smart display tell you the weather or play music for you. And you should! This is a great use case, especially since smart displays like the Echo Show allow you to see more detailed weather information on screen. But these are not the only features of these handy devices. Considering the price, you should be able to get the most out of your smart display purchase.

Amazon’s Echo Show has its own special tricks and ways to enable it. Here are my three favorite ways to use the Echo Show, and how to fix the feature I hate the most. Prefer a different system? Don’t forget to check out our guides on the best smart speakers and how to set up your smart home.

play with widgets

Widgets are my favorite casual feature of the Echo Show. These are small squares with customizable shortcut content, from sticky notes and calendars to smart home management and quick access to specific music.

Originally only available on the larger Echo Show 15, it is now available on the Echo Show 8 and 10 as well. With the Echo Show 15, your widgets are always on screen thanks to the extra space, and there’s a widget panel that can accommodate up to 10 widgets. On Echo Shows 8 and 10, it appears in a rotating slideshow on the screen. You can display up to 4 widgets on Echo Show 8 and up to 6 on Echo Show 10.

I love using it for calendar views, smart home favorites, and to keep the weather close at hand. If you want your device to focus on smart home control, these are perfect for customizing your smart home controls. The Echo Hub (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is a smart home-focused device that relies entirely on widgets.

Check on your child and cat

The Echo Show has a camera at the top of its screen that can be used for both video calls and an indoor security camera. Under this umbrella are his two main functions. One is Live Feed, which lets you view the live feed coming from your Echo Show device, and the other is Home Monitoring, which you can use with other smart home devices to set up routines.

You can ask Echo Show to provide a live feed of other Show devices if you know the name of the device (or you can select the device from the device list if you don’t want to use voice commands. Masu). This is an easy way to quickly check in on pets, kids, etc. without using full-fledged security cameras. The device alerts anyone in the room that someone is using an Echo Show to monitor the room, making it less obtrusive than a real security camera.
