How to sell used items on Amazon in 2024 (step-by-step guide)

Amazon’s seller community often talks about creating private label brands and reselling products through wholesale and retail arbitrage. You might want to pay more attention to the fact that you can actually sell used items on Amazon.

Amazon used condition guidelines

  • Used – Like new or with open box:
The item is in perfect working condition with the original packaging intact and in good condition with minor damage, with or without the original protective packaging. Instructions must be included.
  • Used – Very Good:
This item has been well cared for, has had limited use and is still in good condition. There may be limited signs of wear, such as small scratches or cosmetic imperfections. The original packaging may have been damaged or the item may have been repackaged. Missing accessories must be clearly defined for each item.
  • Used – Good:
Item is in good condition and fully functional, but shows signs of wear from continued use. It may be repackaged or arrive with damaged packaging. There may be markings or minor cosmetic damage. Parts, accessories, manuals, etc. may be out of stock.
  • Used – Tolerance:
The item is still functional but has significant wear and has been repackaged or the original packaging has been damaged. It shows signs of wear such as scratches, dents, corner wear, and identification marks. Parts, accessories, manuals, etc. may be out of stock.

According to Amazon, the following conditions are not acceptable for selling on Amazon:
  • The item is soiled with mold, heavy dirt, corrosion, or other signs of uncleanliness
  • The item has damage that affects its use.
  • The product is missing parts or accessories necessary for use (excluding instructions)
  • Product needs repair
  • The product is a copy, counterfeit, replica, or imitation of the original product.
  • Products created for promotional purposes, such as product samples and advance reading materials
  • The product’s expiration date (including “best before” and “sell by” dates) has expired or is about to expire, or the expiration date has been changed or removed
  • This product has been designated as unsaleable by the manufacturer.

When selling used items, you must specify condition to ensure a good customer experience. The last thing you want to do is list an item as “like new, used” and then end up with an unhappy customer because you sent an item that actually falls under “Used”.

It’s usually a good idea to list something as a condition under which you think the item is. For example, if you think the item is in “like new” condition, write “Excellent.” That way, customer expectations are likely to be exceeded rather than not met.

How to sell certified used and refurbished products

Amazon offers a program called Amazon Renewed. Through this program, sellers can list used and refurbished products that meet Amazon’s performance and testing standards.

Not all sellers are eligible to sell through the Amazon Renewed program. Typically, only experienced sellers meet the strict requirements. Amazon does this to ensure that businesses selling like-new or refurbished products are authentic and of high quality.

According to Amazon, to qualify for Amazon Renewed, you must meet the following criteria:

  • “Submit an invoice that shows a minimum total of $50,000 in qualifying refurbished purchases within the past 90 days from the date of claim. You can black out the unit purchase amount on your invoice. Sellers who intend to offer home, tool, or lawn and garden and kitchen-related products may submit invoices showing total qualifying refurbished purchases of $50,000 or more in the past 180 days. Please note.
  • For existing Amazon sellers, your ODR must be 0.8% or less for the next 90 days.
  • If you require permission to list a factory refurbished item (no manufacturer warranty), please include at least 8 images of a sample unit for review of the product and packaging (the box in which the product is shipped, the inside of the packaging and padding, the top of the product, etc.). ) must be sent. and the bottom, all four sides of the product).
  • Your company warrants all refurbished products under the Amazon Renewed Warranty and is responsible for all claims under the warranty.
  • Approval to list the Apple brand in the Consumer Electronics category requires invoices dated within 90 days for a total value of $2.5 million in Apple refurbished products. ”

How to list used products on Amazon

This process is similar to listing a new product. The only difference is that you must enter the correct item condition.

We present real-world examples using products from the Tools category. Keep in mind that when listing used products on Amazon, you probably won’t be creating an entirely new product, but rather adding an offer under an existing product listing with the “used” condition. You cannot create a product listing for a used product if the same product is already sold on Amazon, even if the existing product only offers products in “new” condition.

In this example, we will list a used cordless drill.

As you can see, the top offer is in “new” status and is also the offer that is currently in your buy box.

Below that, multiple “used” offers are displayed for the customer to choose from. Condition notes will also be displayed to explain any defects or issues with the product.

In Seller Central, go to Manage Inventory and then Add Products.

Paste the ASIN of the above cordless drill in “Add Product”.

When you search for a product’s ASIN, the next page gives you the option to set the product’s overall condition (new or used). I chose “Used”.

Next, click on “Sell this product”.

On the offer page, enter information about the product you’re selling, including price, condition, and fulfillment method.

What I would like to focus on is “condition”. Now, select the option that best describes the condition of the used item you’re selling, following the condition guidelines discussed earlier.

After selecting the correct used condition, you can add condition notes if desired. This section is optional, but recommended.

You also have the option to ship used items via FBA or FBM.

Are you ready to sell used items on Amazon?

We hope this answered your questions about selling used items on Amazon. Personally, I recommend starting with used books. This is because used books are very cheap and easy to obtain.

Amazon allows sellers to offer products used in certain categories, but be careful what you list. Items must be in good enough working condition to be sold. If in doubt, we recommend listing on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
